Field Marshal Slug - Memorabilia

Simon [Dino] Dale Field Marshal Slug guitaristI am a collector of memorabilia and facts on the band.  I saw the band live many times between 1983 to 1985. I was student,[broke but happy] living near Carmarthen in West Wales, i went to a gig and the support band, 'THE SLUGS', made me sit up and take notice !  they had the crowd 'buzzing', there enthusiasm was infectious and very, very addictive ! it was just total madness  and so, I became, for want of a better word, a fan of the Fun, just Because they took the Piss out of the music scene.  Smelly underpants and all !  this was not normal, this was a paradox. !   'The most Tounge in cheek bunch of spoof performers i ever did saw' ! ...  If you have any info on the band, please contact me: [info@fieldmarshalslug.co.uk] Martin Peters. • Andy 'Dennis' Duff, [the mohawk punk drummer] played many gigs in just his 'underpants' sometimes unwashed, not nice if you were at the front!! Mosh pit die hards witnessed the sick disgusting display on many foul occasions.
  • Andy 'Dennis' Duff and Jamie Crawford, appeared as 'extras' as 'Dummies' in the Quadrophenia's star actor 'Phil Daniels' Pop Video. Filmed in London. 1984. • The Damned - English / British Punk Rock Band

Exclusive Photographs taken for Impact Magazine.

    Date: 1985

Venue: The New Ocean Club, South Wales, UK

They were published in issue 1 in 1985.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I travelled to the gig in the back of an old van (no seats in the back) with the

South Wales Punk Band Field-Marshall Slug. We were allowed in through

the back doors of the New Ocean Club to watch The Damned do their pre-

gig sound check. The band seemed happy for me to take photos while they

practised on stage but their manager got a bit stroppy, saying he wasn't happy

with me taking pictures of the band who were not dressed in their proper stage

gear. Maybe he didn't have a very good grasp of Punk ethics.

The lads from Field-Marshall Slug interviewed The Damned who were very

obliging and answered all of their questions, while I got a few more photos of

them relaxing. We stayed for the evening gig which was excellent - loud and

energetic as a good Punk Gig should be.

Maybe I'll print the full interview here on the site sometime...

It,s always that bloddy Damned stuff ?
  • Lets have something different !
  • Ok.
  • well, let's carry on ...
  • Jamie Crawford and Andy Duff, also did a, Live Review of 'The House Martins' with 'The Happy Mondays' as support, for 'Impact Magazine' at Dingwalls, Camden, London. 1984.
  • A very 'pissed' Mr Rat Scabies, declared that night, " The Slugs are Shit" ![raises pint pot]
  • Yes Rat, We know...
  • Oh Camden Town nights.
  •
  • Keeping with 'The DAMNED' connection, Jamie is helping the good Captain Sensible, with his most excellent Blah Party.
  •
  • The Slugs were 'announced', then called on stage at The Solstice at Stonehenge' Free Music Festival.[1984] Headlined by Hawkwind, But they were not there !!! They were in a Pub miles away, No one had told them they were billed to play !!! 'Ladies Gents and Space Heads will you please welcome on stage Field Marshal Slug'. Empty Stage Ohh Dear, [that's hippy organisers for you].
  • The Slugs original 'live' line up, featured 'No Bass guitarist'![the bass player Vince was sacked on the way to the first recording session and not replaced] Geoff Russell on guitar played bass notes on his 6 string for live gigs !
  •
  • Popped into Factory Records to present a cassette demo in 1983 and Yes they were polite, in sayiny NO you are not for us, 'I will give this to Tony [Wilson] later' [did not get the irony]
  •
  • The Tube {TV Music Show presented by Jools Holland and Paula Yates] were also very polite, in saying NO you are not for us, [Did not get the irony]
  • The Slugs influances, according to interview reports were, The Damned, Hanoi Rocks, The Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Crass, The Fall, The Cult, Hawkwind,  Black Sabbath, The Clash, T-Rex, Anti-knowhere-league, Motorhead, Ziggy Stardust, to name but a few...
  • Other Slug influaences that have been noted are
  • Slade, Bauhaus, The Cockney Rejects, Thin Lizzy, The Who, The Kinks, ???
  • The Slugs played for Hawkwind's Nik Turner's Birthday party, in his living room.... Yes ! featuring Nik on Sax. [Blow that trumpet Nicky boy].
  • The Slugs played at a bikers open air festival, run by 'The Outcasts' they went down well, even if they were a bit punky and mad for the hard-core bikers, they survived ! [Just]  The payment for the gig.... NO Money just a substantial amount of drugs !![Ohhhh dear]
  • 'The Flabby Fannies' were a offshoot 'Slug' Punk band playing Hardcore Noise Pollution [volume level 11] played Live between 83-84. Featuring 'Dennis' Duff on Vocals , Jamie Crawford on Drums, and Geoff Russell on Guitar. A site for sore eyes and a site for sore ears !.
  • The Slugs supported the 'Frank Chickens' in Cardiff '84, They ended up the headline after the promoter heard of the reviews from the Blue Moon Festival, 'Frank Chickens' later became one of the 'Red Wedge' with Paul Weller, Billy Bragg, Jimmy Sumerville and Ken Livingstone. [hI sung dUng cHow mow]
  • 'I Love Bats' the most popular and enthusiastic song performed Live ! was never recorded in the Studio ??
  • Ex Slugs Roadie and J'Arthers Drummer, Simon Nugent.. Now runs a international Drum sales company in Wales. Fuck ?
  •   Field Marshal Slug lead guitarist Jamie and Simon [Dino] Dale
  • The Slugs were 'arrested' in Cornwall, as they finished a live Set and came off stage. The crowd watched in amazement as eight Police officers took the band off in three police cars to the cells for the night! [if only we had that Rock'n Roll moment on video!!!]. Wow fucking weee [1985 uk tour].
  • Field marshal Slug played a festival in the summer of 1985 in mid wales as 2nd top billing, so to celebrate this promotion to the big time Jamie Slug had the bright idea to create the spectactular visual opening to the set, as it had just reached sunset and the lighting would show off the swarm of tiny feathers released out of a large duck down pillow.. yes it looked fab, went down very well with the crowd, but did not go down too well with the stage crew as all the feathers ended up getting into all the electric equiptment on stage and causing a Panic. "Don't you ever do that again you fucking twat" was the general roadie shout as they came of stage. But boy did it look cool. [all the monitors needed a major internal clean..fucking great !]
  • Field Marshal Slug / The Alarm.. Great Gig.. The Slugs guitar Topped that night...Big Style. [we need more info on this] ??? -Quote from a review on The Alarm's web site, at the gathering gig [how can this be ??] please please give us some more info on this, any tit bits will be helpfull you dudes.
  • The Punk+Rock nite at St Dogs was stopped by a riot of major fighting between Bikers and Punks. The Headliners Field Marshal Slug came on stage and 'cooled' things down with a Fun Storming set and all went home happy and freinds. [but somewhat bruised] I think the Slugs manager at the time [Barry Davies] started a bit of a Ruk with the promoter cos the slugs were blamed for the fighting and were not going to be paid, so he ended up sticking one on him ! and he did get paid in full.. result all round. Blood off stage Please note ...
  • Warner Bros would have signed the band if 'Glam Bang' sold more than 1'000 copies of the single in the first month of release..it was 196 short.. [fuck I would have bourght the rest me self [j.c]
  • Glam Bang the single was found in W.H.Smiths bargain basement for a 'few pence' shortly after.
  •

  • Teenage Punk band 'Mexican Seafood' Encored with a storming cover version of 'Glam Bang', Live in Wolverhamton 1999, and stole the show !! Vocalist and guitarist Ben Mottershead wowed the followers with his punk atitude of that old glam fun classic.
